This one speaks. Not a random mash of personal tokens as is so common with this form, but more an assembled power object. A meticulous and considerate theme of human interaction with the animal and natural world is obvious under examination. The great majority of the assembly falls into a few categories:

MAN: Mirror centered prominently with a full figure doll (human form) to left, other    reflective surfaces employed on both sides.

ANIMAL: Bisque House Cat, Dove or Pigeon, Brass Lion and Cock with Saber.

NATURE: Peach Pits, Fruit Seeds, Sliced Nuts, all Southern in origin.

FETISH: Wishbones, Chicken or other small fowl sawed single Vertebrae, what appears to be a rat's tooth and mandible along with a wood treen scrap with brass rattles / bells.

A few more typical Victorian tokens, buttons and bits of jewelry together with sea or melted glass are present as fills. The brass Rooster with Sword refers to the Democratic Party and General Winfield Scott Hancock’s bid for the Presidency in 1880. Hancock was a Union Army hero at Gettysburg, supervisor of the executions levied in the trial of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and held a prominent Reconstruction post in New Orleans Louisiana after the war among many other distinctions.

Found in an Indiana collectors estate, no direct geographical provenance for this piece exists. Evidence and logic strongly suggest that it is Southern in origin and mostly likely crafted by an African American artist. Stands 10 inches high x roughly 8” in the round. Heavy clay and gold radiator paint surface. High sculptural relief and intricate surface has held up remarkably well. Loss to cat’s foot and damage to the thinnest shells. There are two voids where nuts came loose at time of creation, the patina is consistent. Important example worth study.
