The timing of the Mexican Revolution and the accessibility of photography are such that reference images of Old Mexico's gentry are exceptionally rare. The elaborate Charro suit, riding crop and early studio photo seen here all report a life of privilege.

With paper enlargements still in their infancy, the result was something like a hazy outline. For those able to afford it, the portrait was colored by hand with chalks. The result is a dreamy, adaptive folk art exclusive to this time period and process. Cracks and punctures affect right half (including subject's pants) have remained stable because of the linen canvas frame support. Chips and edge tears are less noticeable. Measures 16 x 20”, worthy of study and restoration.
