Government Island (part of the Les Cheneaux Islands in now Hiawatha National Forest) was owned and operated as a quarry by the federal government for much of the late 19th century, used in the construction of many local light houses.

Exceptional occupational photo here shows a house boat grocery, produce and possibly liquor (wood barrels atop) store servicing the early modern settlement in that marsh. Appears to be a single three generation family, posing with their business and perhaps home. Captioned in fountain pen and pasted onto an early cigar box lid (stamped HJB Cigar), which they may also have sold.

Measures 5.25 x 8” in original condition. Crease along top, development wipes, edge chips and pinholes. Consistent toning from the heavy acid content in the pulpy cigar lid. An incredible example of early American ingenuity.
